An important part of instruction and assessment is ensuring that the students are benefiting and learning from the methods that we as teachers choose to use. One way to make the students aware of what they are expected to achieve in a class is to share with them clear learning outcomes. In my opinion it is the teacher’s job to take the outcomes from the curriculum and reword them into student friendly language. These reworded outcomes should be explained to the students at the beginning of each class so they are aware of what they are expected to be taking from the day’s lesson or project. It is also important to provide the students with clear criteria regarding how a grade will be assigned to their work. I think that the grading criteria should be distributed at the beginning of the assignment so that the students can look at the requirements and know what is expected of them in order to be successful.
A teacher’s main goal in instruction and assessment is to guide and facilitate the success of students. By explaining learner outcomes in student friendly language and providing clear criteria for evaluations, teachers are taking a step in the right direction in aiding their students to achieve this much desired success in the classroom.
